Mumbai witnessed an outpouring of grief and admiration as fans and members of the film fraternity gathered outside the residence of veteran actor Manoj Kumar to pay their last respects. Manoj Kumar, lovingly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his iconic portrayal of patriotism in Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2025, following prolonged health issues. His cremation is scheduled for April 5 at Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle.

The actor’s mortal remains were brought to his Juhu home, allowing admirers and colleagues to bid farewell to the cinematic legend. Visuals from the residence showed a sombre crowd comprising fans, celebrities, and family members. Among those who visited were Dharmendra, Raveena Tandon, and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who shared heartfelt tributes. Dharmendra, visibly emotional, recalled his early days in the industry alongside Manoj Kumar, with whom he acted in films like ‘Shaadi’. Raveena Tandon described him as “Bharat” in spirit, while Bhandarkar praised his contribution to infusing patriotism into Indian cinema.

Manoj Kumar’s illustrious career was marked by films such as ‘Upkar’, ‘Purab Aur Paschim’, ‘Shor’, and ‘Kranti’, which resonated deeply with audiences for their focus on national pride and social themes. Tributes poured in from across Bollywood and beyond.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Manoj Kumar an icon whose works ignited a spirit of national pride. Akshay Kumar reflected on how the veteran inspired actors to embody patriotism, while Aamir Khan described him as an institution whose films brought him closer to the common man.

Born Harikrishan Giri Goswami in Abbottabad, Manoj Kumar adopted his screen name after being inspired by Dilip Kumar’s character in ‘Shabnam’. His career spanned decades during which he not only acted but also directed films that shaped Indian cinema’s golden era. His passing marks the end of an era defined by cinematic patriotism and storytelling depth.

The funeral procession will leave from his residence at 11:00 AM on April 5. Fans continue to gather outside his home as they prepare to bid goodbye to a legend whose legacy will remain etched in the annals of Indian cinema.
